FIRM PROFILE
Vernell Barnes, Architect is a small design firm located in the Metropolitan Atlanta area and began operations in January 1997. Vernell Barnes has more than 40 years of experience for a range of institutional, residential, corporate, commercial, and retail projects. VBA has a client base across the southeast US.
Our design philosophy emphasizes incorporating the Client’s idea at every design milestone. Using our professional skills and creative talents to blend those ideas with the program, schedule and budget requirements, Vernell Barnes, Architect provides design solutions to meet each client’s objectives while enhancing the environment.
We seek to build long-lasting client relationships based on understanding and meeting Client needs, providing good design and a high standard of professional service.

VERNELL BARNES
Mr. Barnes is a Registered Architect in Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. Mr. Barnes is a member of The American Institute of Architects and is NCARB certified. Mr. Barnes received his degree in architecture as the first African-American graduate of Auburn University’s program and is the first African-American to sit for the licensing examination in the State of Mississippi and earn a license to practice in the state.
Mr. Barnes is a registered architect with over 40 years of experience in the design and management of large and small projects. Before founding Vernell Barnes, Architect in 1997, he worked with several small architectural firms prior to serving as a Project Architect for one of Georgia’s largest architectural firms from 1982 until 1997. Serving as a project Architect, he was responsible for coordinating multi-discipline teams for numerous large-scale projects, interfacing with clients and consultants and overseeing the entire design process, from design development through construction documents and assisting the contract administrator during the construction phase.
VBA has been responsible for small and large-scale office buildings, correctional facilities, medical office buildings, educational, hospitality, retail and residential projects. VBA has recently provided professional services as the Architect of Record for design of the 3-story, 53,000 SF Albany Central Square Office Building, Retail and Parking Decks for Dougherty County Government in Albany, GA. Mr. Barnes was an integral part of the development for the renowned Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s headquarters building. The practice primarily focuses on commercial and higher education projects but has experience with projects of smaller scope and requirements.
